This article is simply to highlight the pros and cons of a softbox or ring light and to help you make an informed choice on which to purchase for creating video contents. If you are a video content creator, YouTube, business owner, course creator or you sell any product online, then you will find this comparison between the softbox and ring light very useful.
WHAT DO I NEED SOFTBOX OR RINGLIGHT FOR?
You need an artificial light source if you want to take your videos to the next level. Your videos are as good as the light that hits your camera lens. So what this means is that, more lighting that gets to your camera lens, the more professional your videos will look.
Sunlight/electricity is not always available anytime you want to take pictures or make a video, so a backup plan is needed, some softboxes and ring lights come with batteries that allow you to shoot even without electricity.
How about when you shoot at nighttime or dark room and there is no enough light, you need a backup light and that’s where the artificial lighting comes in. So yes, you need a softbox or a ring light.
Now you know that you need an external light source, should you go for a softbox or a ringlight?
RINGLIGHT AND SOFTBOX | WHATS THE DIFFRENCE?
These are all artificial light sources but the difference is in their design and the result they both produce. However they are very useful for both video and photo use.
Below is a picture of a softbox
A softbox: is simply a big box of light that comes in many shapes, oval, round, hexagon or umbrella styled. It is designed to deliver lighting to a specific area of a subject. The kind of lighting it gives the subject is soft and not harsh hence the name “Softbox”
A softbox comes with a diffuser with is a thin sheet of cotton that helps soften or let’s say reduce the harshness of light that comes from the box.
Below is a picture taken with a softbox
A ring light: it is exactly as the name suggests a light in ring form. The light is in a ring formation thereby creating a circle in the middle. You can easily attach a phone or camera to the centre of the ring light. The ring light helps give artistic lighting in the subject eyes too, which most makeup artists use often.
WHATS THE DIFFRENCE?
Softbox gives you room to be more in control of lighting your subject while with the ring light you have less control of the lighting situation.
The ringlight gives even lighting all-round the subject while the softbox gives more directional lighting and you need two for more even lighting( this is dependent on the size of the softbox though)
The softbox produces more soft and nice light effect that is not harsh on the eyes unlike the ringlight which hits the subject directly.
The softbox is used to create cinematic looks while ringlight not.
To sum the whole thing up, the difference between a softbox and a ringlight is the result they produced when used to light subjects.
WHICH DO YOU SUGGEST I BUY?
I have seen so many great content creators like Tayo aina, marquez, peter mckanon and the rest and all have softboxes as their major artificial light source. The reason is simple, softboxes produces the best results both videos and photos. Furthermore lighting a subject with a softbox gives you control during lighting.
SO YEAH BUY A SOFTBOX.
HOW MUCH DO THEY COST?
The price depends on the capacity, the brand and the design of the softbox. But both go for as low as $70 to $1000. A popular brand for softboxes is Godox.
